Just a Friend Trilogy · Book 1

Just a Friend

When Jess makes a playful bet with friends, Lana overhears. And Lana simply loves to play games.

When Jess is compelled to introduce her long-term boyfriend Mark as “just a friend” during a bet with her friends, she does not realise Lana is listening. Jess refuses to cut the glamorous barmaid out of their lives, even as Lana begins turning the harmless bet into a deliberate test of exactly how secure Jess’ relationship really is.

A trivial bet. A dangerous audience.

About the book

Jess expects her obligation to honour the bet to disappear as quickly as it begins. Instead, the luscious Lana overhears it and senses an opportunity. What starts as playful provocation becomes increasingly deliberate as Lana tests Mark, Jess and the boundaries Jess insists are still firmly in place.

The first book follows that pressure from its apparently trivial beginning through the first serious cracks in Jess’ certainty. Lana knows what she wants. Jess’ problem is deciding how much she is willing to tolerate long after the terms of the bet have been honoured.

The game is set. The players are chosen.

The tension at the centre

Lana does not need Jess to make the first move. She only needs Jess to keep letting her stay close. Every provocation gives Jess another opportunity to draw a line, and every refusal to do so gives Lana more room to push.

The tension comes from that imbalance: Lana is deliberate, confident and increasingly bold, while Jess keeps finding reasons not to remove the very person threatening the relationship she wants to protect.

Character, before everything

Three different instincts

Confidence and provocation

Lana

Confident, calculated and entirely aware of the effect she has on the people around her.

Warmth and exposure

Jess

Warm, loyal and convinced she knows where her boundaries are, even as Lana keeps forcing her to redraw them.

Loyalty under pressure

Mark

Jess’ long-term boyfriend becomes the object of Lana’s attention and the measure of whether “just a friend” was ever as harmless as it sounded.

Why read Just a Friend?

Start here for a contemporary relationship placed under pressure by someone beautiful, confident and determined enough to keep testing it.

The appeal lies in watching a throwaway bet between friends metastasise into a genuine threat, and in seeing how Jess rationalises every small concession long before she understands what those concessions are becoming.
